Jhansi Hospital Fire: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of children in a fire at the children’s ward of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district. 

PM also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.  

The fire, which broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) around 10:45 pm on Friday, claimed the lives of at least 10 children, while 16 others sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment. Officials suspect the blaze was caused by an electrical short circuit.  

Deepest Condolences to Innocent Children: PM

"Heartbreaking! The fire accident at Jhansi Medical College is devastating. My deepest condolences to those who lost their innocent children. I pray for the strength of the grieving families to endure this immense loss," the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) quoted Modi in a Hindi post on X.  

The PMO added that the local administration, under the state government’s supervision, is carrying out relief and rescue efforts.  

Outer Section Rescue Successful 

According to District Magistrate Avinash Kumar, children in the outer section of the NICU were successfully rescued, while those in the interior part, reserved for more critical patients, faced greater risk.  

“Prima facie, we have information about the death of 10 children,” Kumar said, noting that the situation is under investigation.  

The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols in critical hospital wards, as rescue teams work to ensure all affected families receive necessary support.
