Terminal 1 of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to undergo a major renovation to accommodate an increased capacity of 20 million passengers per year. This refurbishment will boost the terminal’s capacity by 42%, enabling it to handle a significantly higher volume of passengers.

The renovation work is scheduled to begin from November 2025. Till its Finalization CSMIA T2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport will manage the capacity gap created by out of service T1.

According to Press statement by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), is embarking on a major transformation with the redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1). The much-anticipated project aims to redefine the passenger experience while setting a new benchmark in sustainability and innovation. Upon completion, the new terminal will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, marking a 42% increase in capacity, reflecting Mumbai’s growing role as a global aviation hub.

Speaking on the development, Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Airport Holdings Limited said, “The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience."

The renovation will span over two million square feet of built-up area and is designed to be a model of digitization and passenger convenience. To minimize disruption to airport operations, the work will be completed in phases, with the demolition of the existing structure set to begin in November 2025, followed by the construction of the new terminal. During the demolition and construction phases, the capacity gap left by T1’s redevelopment will be addressed by CSMIA’s Terminal 2 (T2) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is slated to begin operations in 2025.

These airports will work together to accommodate the growing passenger demand for both Mumbai city and the surrounding Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
