After Elon Musk Buzz, TikTok Now Being Bought By Microsoft? What We Know So Far

United States President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters that Microsoft is in talks to acquire the video-sharing platform TikTok and that he would like to see a bidding war over the app.
Microsoft denied to comment on this, according to a Reuters report. Additionally, TikTok and ByteDance also did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for a comment.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance has about 170 million American users. The app was briefly taken offline as a law that required its Chinese owner ByteDance to either sell it on national security grounds or face a ban took effect on January 19.
Trump took office on January 20, and signed an executive order seeking to delay the enforcement of the law by 75 days.
Last week, Trump said that he was in talks with multiple people over buying TikTok and would most probably have a decision on the app's future in the next 30 days.
Previously, Trump has also said that he was open to Elon Musk buying the social media app if he wanted to do so. Musk, however, has made no comments on the same.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup Perplexity AI on Sunday made a proposal to merge with TikTok, with the US government getting up to half of the new company in future, according to a Reuters report.
This marks the second time that Microsoft has been in the frame to acquire TikTok.
In his first term, Trump ordered to separate its US version from ByteDance citing national security concerns.
In 2020, Microsoft had emerged as a top bidder, but the talks collapsed soon and Trump's divestment push ended a few months later when he left office.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO called that deal the 'strangest thing' he has ever worked on.
Reportedly, the US government had a "particular set of requirements and then it just disappeared," he said in 2021.
