If you have important banking tasks lined up, plan ahead as banks in certain regions will remain closed on December 18 and 19. According to the Reserve Bank of India's ( RBI ) official holiday calendar, bank closures are state-specific and may vary depending on local events and observances. While branches in some areas will shut their doors, banking services in other states will continue as usual.

Read on to find out why banks will remain closed on these dates and which states are impacted.

Why Will Banks Be Closed On December 18?
Banks in Meghalaya will observe a public holiday on December 18 to honour the death anniversary of U Soso Tham. Born in 1873 in Sohra (Cherrapunji), Tham is celebrated as one of Meghalaya's most notable poets. He is credited with introducing secular literature in Khasi, blending traditional idioms with modern English influences in his works. His contributions remain deeply rooted in Khasi culture and literary heritage.

On this day, not only banks but also government offices in Meghalaya will remain closed. Customers in other states, however, will find banks operating as usual.

Why Will Banks Be Closed On December 19?
On December 19, banks in Goa—specifically in the capital city Panaji—will remain closed to mark Goa Liberation Day. This day commemorates the end of Portuguese colonial rule in 1961, when Indian forces successfully liberated Goa, bringing it under Indian administration after nearly 450 years of European control. The day is celebrated annually with parades, cultural events, and patriotic programs across the state.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) releases an annual calendar of bank holidays, which accounts for national events, state-specific observances, and regular closures like the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Bank holidays often differ across states due to regional festivals and significant local events, so customers are advised to check their local schedules before visiting branches.
