Asia-Pacific Markets Show Mixed Performance

Asia-Pacific markets showed a mixed performance on Monday as investors digested China’s manufacturing and industrial profit data.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 saw a decline, while the Topix managed to post a small gain. Chip-related stocks in Japan took a hit, particularly companies like Advantest, Tokyo Electron, and Renesas Electronics, as concerns grew over China’s DeepSeek AI model potentially challenging U.S. AI leadership. Softbank Group also experienced a sharp drop due to its stake in chip designer Arm.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index ended higher, while China’s CSI 300 index closed in the red. Data from China showed a surprising contraction in factory activity for January, falling below expectations. Wall street update

Select tech stocks made an attempt to recover in after-hours trading following a steep sell-off in companies linked to artificial intelligence earlier in the day. Nvidia showed some improvement, rebounding after a significant drop, while other tech giants like Broadcom and Oracle also saw gains.

Fears surrounding the Chinese startup DeepSeek reached a peak, sending shockwaves through the tech market. The company's free open-source language model, which reportedly cost very little to develop, sparked concerns about Big Tech’s AI investments. DeepSeek's app surpassed OpenAI's to become the most-downloaded free app on the U.S. Apple App Store, further fueling anxiety.

This turmoil contributed to a notable decline in the Nasdaq Composite, while the S&P 500 also saw a downturn. Investor focus is now shifting toward upcoming corporate earnings reports, with major companies like Starbucks and Boeing expected to report soon. In the days ahead, investors are also anticipating earnings from top firms in the "Magnificent Seven" group, including Meta, Microsoft, Tesla, and Apple.
