Ambuja Cements Limited has become the first cement manufacturer to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation (AFID). The global alliance, coordinated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), seeks to accelerate the transition to Net Zero emissions across various industries in alignment with the Paris Agreement.

The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. Its targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

As part of its green energy strategy, Ambuja Cements has announced plans to invest Rs 100 billion in renewable energy projects, with a total capacity of 1 GW and an additional 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). This initiative is expected to power 60 per cent of the company’s expanded operations with green energy by FY2028, substantially reducing its carbon footprint while delivering economic benefits.

In FY2024, Ambuja Cements made significant strides in sustainability by utilising over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources. The company also became 11 times water-positive and 8 times plastic-negative, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship.

“This marks another significant step for Ambuja in its sustainability journey,” said Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director of Ambuja Cements. “We are already among the lowest emission intensity cement producers globally and are undertaking strategic initiatives to further reduce our GHG emissions. As a member of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation, we will be able to leverage global expertise and share our own approach to decarbonisation.”

The AFID serves as a global platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration among companies in energy-intensive industries, helping them develop robust decarbonisation strategies aligned with national commitments to climate change mitigation.
