Washington: Suhas Subramanyam, United States Congressman-elect is opposed to the idea of imposing tariffs on India as it will lead to a trade war between the two countries.
Under Trump's administration there is a likelihood that higher tariffs might be imposed on Indian exports.
Suhas Subramanyam is a part of the House of Representatives and he aims to support democracy and reform the immigration system in the U.S. He is also against federal job cuts by the Trump administration.
By making this statement, Subramanyam is highlighting the need for a shared prosperity between India and the U.S. as well as economic collaboration over division.
"I don't support (imposing) tariffs on India. I think that would be really bad. It would lead to a trade war. And I don't think it's good for either country," Subramanyam said in a PTI report.
Donald Trump, before his election as US President had not only criticised India's tariff structure but had also suggested imposing reciprocal tax on India and China.
He said that there are a lot of good businesses that do great work in India and are expanding to the U.S., highlighting the need for both countries to work together for stronger outcomes.
Suhas Subramanyam is an American lawyer and member of the Virginia Senate, representing the 32nd district. He is known for his contribution in organizing volunteers to rebuild communities during hurricane Katrina in 2005. He has also actively worked during his time in the Obama Administration towards improving healthcare access, safety and prosperity. He is also the newest member of the 'samosa caucus' which is a nickname given to Indian-American lawmakers in the US Congress.
