A trial run of a train on the Chenab Bridge, one of the world’s highest railway bridges, was successfully conducted at a speed of 110 km/h. This test marks the progress of the Jammu-Srinagar railway project, specifically the Katra-Banihal section, which is part of the larger Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw took to Twitter to highlight the success, mentioning that the train reached speeds of 110 km/h during the trial.

"Tested train run at 110 kmph on Chenab bridge. Historic day indeed. The Jammu Srinagar railway line is getting ready to be operational soon," Vaishnaw  wrote.

The trial run, supervised by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), has drawn attention from residents of areas like Sangaldan, who expect the new railway line to improve connectivity and reduce travel times between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.

Once operational, the Jammu-Srinagar rail line is expected to cut down the travel time between Jammu and Srinagar to just over three hours. The Banihal-Katra section is currently undergoing its final safety inspection, and the project is nearing completion.

The railway line includes the construction of tunnels and bridges, including the Chenab Bridge, which required the use of 30,000 tonnes of steel due to its height of 359 meters. Other notable infrastructure features include tunnels designed to address seismic risks in the region.

The upcoming Vande Bharat Express, designed for the extreme weather conditions of the region, is also expected to be introduced as part of the project. This new rail service will provide an alternative means of travel between Jammu and Srinagar, offering a more reliable option for commuters.
