Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest Rs 830 crores or $8.3 billion in cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region by 2030. This investment aims to enhance cloud computing capacity in India and is expected to contribute $15.3 billion to India’s GDP while supporting over 81,300 full-time jobs annually in the local data center supply chain.
On January 22, 2025, AWS and the Maharashtra Government formalized the investment plan by exchanging a signed MoU at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

AWS's decision to set up its operations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is a pivotal moment for Maharashtra,” says Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
AWS: Digital Growth
David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President at AWS, emphasized the potential of India’s digital economy, highlighting how the investment will advance Maharashtra’s digital ambitions and democratize emerging technologies like cloud and AI for businesses of all sizes.
“At AWS, we see tremendous potential for India’s digital economy to thrive for years to come with the growing demand for cloud and artificial intelligence. This is why we plan to invest $8.3 billion into cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra by 2030,” says David Zapolsky, Senior Vice President of Global Public Policy and General Counsel at Amazon.
He adds, “We are pleased to continue to collaborate with the Maharashtra Government to advance the State’s digital ambitions and democratise access to emerging technology for enterprises, public sector organisations, startups, and small and medium-sized businesses in India. We look forward to working together with the Maharashtra Government to realise our investment plans and advance India's digital growth.”
AWS: Economic and Job Impact
AWS has already invested $3.7 billion in Maharashtra’s cloud infrastructure between 2016 and 2022. The new $8.3 billion investment will support a $15.3 billion contribution to India’s GDP by 2030. It plans to provide 81,300 full-time jobs annually, including roles in telecom, construction, energy, and data center operations.
